The Whitewater Aquatic Center opened in December of 2001 after years of planning, fundraising, and tireless work of a group called SWIM (Setting Whitewater In Motion). The Whitewater Unified School District provided the land adjacent to the high school, the City of Whitewater provided over 2 million dollars in capital support, and the community fundraised over 6 million dollars for the construction of the facility. A non-profit board was formed of community, school, and city representatives who were charged with operating the facility. The WAC Board hired Jason Krapfl to be its first director. In 2003, a sublease agreement was entered into with Mercy Healthcare who operated the facility from 2003-2008. As part of the agreement, Mercy constructed the fitness center which opened in 2004. Following the expiration of the agreement with Mercy, the WAC Board hired Paula Malone to be the Director. During Paula's tenure a number of energy efficiency and cost saving measures were introduced and the facility saw a significant financial turnaround. Paula announced her intentions to retire and the initial 15 year agreement between the City and School District was set to expire in 2016. In January of 2016 a new agreement was approved by the Common Council and School Board. The agreement turns operation of the facility over to the Parks & Recreation Department beginning July 1, 2016.
